Prenatal Yoga

During pregnancy, many women struggle between wanting to stay in shape and do what is best for the baby-to-be. Prenatal yoga is the perfect way to do both. Safe, effective and easy to do, this type of yoga is a great way to stay in shape and lay the foundation for a healthy pregnancy, labour and baby. Whether you are new to yoga or already an experienced practitioner, you can enjoy the benefits of yoga while pregnant.

Helping to relieve common discomforts that occur naturally during pregnancy, yoga can also promote positive thinking, reducing the negative effects of stress and help to cultivate a stronger bond with your baby.

When you practice yoga, you are not only stretching your muscles, you are stretching the tissues that encase your muscles, stimulating your organ systems, promoting the circulation of blood and oxygen through the body. Deep breathing practiced during prenatal yoga sessions will help you through even the toughest delivery.

As you become acutely aware of proper body alignment through yoga, you can carry yourself and your 'bump' in an integrated manner, which can help to reduce the degree of pelvic tilt associated with pregnancy and significantly reduce lower back pain. A regular practice of squatting asana tones and strengthens the muscles of your pelvis floor, helping you to remain comfortable in a squatting position. Even if you choose not to squat during labour, you will want to be able to use these muscles efficiently and effectively when nature calls upon you to push your baby into the world.

Participating in a group prenatal yoga class provides a community of support from new friends who understand what you are experiencing. Some programs may even include discussions about pregnancy-related topics such as nursing and birth plans. Women who have already practiced yoga can continue to practice, modifying poses to compensate for their changing bodies. For those new to yoga, prenatal classes are a great place to start; just remember to always get the consent of your doctor.

As minor misalignments increase with pregnancy, it's important to find a teacher who is knowledgeable in biomechanical body alignment. Anusara and Iyengar yoga are just two of the styles focused on healthy alignment in every pose. A good yoga teacher will be able to offer advice and will be aware of the changes occurring during pregnancy and the unique challenges associated with being a new mother.
